Before looking at the need and the variety of applications of massage, it is helpful to examine different civilizations’ and our ancestors’ use massage historically.
Ancient medical treatises dating back to ancient times reveal interesting data regarding the manipulation of the physical body to preserve longevity, beauty and harmony, both physically and mentally.
Pain can be caused as a physical blow to the body or even the result of mental stress, and an early technique to combat the pain was pressing on the affected area. Massage therapy is in fact the oldest curative physical technique used by humans.
Throughout history the most outstandingly women achieved beauty and slenderness of their bodies using different techniques from ancient Egyptian to ancient Chinese civilizations, from Greece through the Roman Empire, and later the development of various additional techniques to enhance the beauty of both the body and face.
In ancient Egypt, for example, doctors recommended the use of milk baths accompanied by daily massages to maintain the slenderness and beauty of woman, always performed by experts.
In ancient Greece, greek women were treated with aromatic oils to relax them and avoid the stress of battle.
Manuscripts found in Rome indicate that Asclepiads, of Greek origin, practiced a form of physical therapy in Rome through massage and to pressure points in the muscle. Roman women preferred gymnastics and massage practiced in ancient Rome to strengthen and beautify the body.
Professor Ling, founder of the well-known Swedish techniques, promulgate the use of Swedish massage and invigorating exercise of patients who spent long periods in bed. Professor Ling rated massage as a great passive exercise.
Shiatsu & Reflexology
Asia has always been one of the continents with the most widely distinguished massage techniques.
These techniques consist of exercises, mainly through digital pressure, made precisely to the affected areas.
Japanese professor Tokujiro Namikoshi, in his book Pressure Therapy Shiatsu, describes that from the palm of the hand to the sole, the pressures caused signiﬁcant healing and not only in the treated area but likewise affected other internal organs of the body, especially to the central nervous system, causing very stimulating and regenerative neurological effects.
Massage as Passive Exercise
Both body and facial massage performed by expert hands can provide great results activating and regenerating the body.
The direct action is limited to massage the body surface through the skin, activating blood ﬂow and generating energy, affecting the joints, tendons, muscles and nerves closest under the skin. Massage is not intended to resolve all anomalies of the body but, accompanied by a balanced diet and hygiene, helps greatly to prevent and delay aging as well as many other abnormalities, such as arthritis or problems with constipation, pregnancy pains, etc.
Massage helps disperse fat, which causes slimming by activating the lymphatic and endocrine system.
Thai Massage (Royal Thai)
These massages are performed both on the Tatami mat or futon using both the masseur’s hands and feet.
The objectives of these more intense massages is to increase ﬂexibility and muscle strength in general, ﬁghting fatigue and stiffness. Different techniques are customized depending on the needs and symptoms of each of our clients.
According to Thai tradition, the Nuad Bo-Rarn, traditional massage, is the set of techniques which regulate the body's energy ﬂow. The Nuad Thai word translates as "the intention of relieving or curing", while Bo-Boran Rarn translates as "sacred, ancient and revered."
This type of massage brings together qualities and characteristics of various Eastern disciplines such as yoga, acupressure (tui-na Chinese) and meditation, grouping more than 200 maneuvers to maintain health and harmony.
It is believed that the founder was Shivago Komarpaj, a contemporary of the Buddha, who was attending his followers to facilitate the physical and meditative capacity through this physical discipline. Over time, this technique arrived in Thailand (the ancient kingdom of Siam).
Balinese massage is an ancient healing therapy indigenous to the island of Bali (Indonesia) and is inspired by classic medical science and supported by Indian Ayurvedic texts.
For several thousand years, merchant ships were traveling through what was known as the "Spice Islands" (the present-day Indonesia) from countries like India and China. In trade and cultural exchange, Hindus shared their knowledge about massage, herbal medicines, medicated oils and Ayurvedic medicine, while China provided all acupressure techniques and expertise of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The fundamental characteristic of Balinese Traditional Massage is effective and powerful through its relaxing and therapeutic healing.
Beauty & Cosmetic
Women’s skin is especially sensitive and experiences damage and decline due to fatigue and stress. Therefore, defense and care for the skin with all means at our disposal is important, and one of the most effective is massage.
The massage movements inﬂuence the sagging muscle and activate dermal sebaceous and sweat glands and follicles pilots, receiving stimulation of the nerve plexus beneath the skin.
The dermis is treated through massage cleansing and dead cells are released from the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands. Tuina Chinese Massage
The Tui Na dates from times prior to the Shang Dynasty in China in 1700 B.C. in the region currently known as Luo Yang in the Hen Nan province.
The oracle bones, discovered in Shaanxi Province, show that Tui-Na massage was used to treat diseases in children and adults’ digestive problems since early times. The beneﬁts of Tui na movement are increased energy and ﬂexibility.
The Tui Na is very effective for the treatment of speciﬁc disorders of skeletal muscles and chronic stress disorders that affect the digestive, respiratory and reproductive systems, and are very effective against stress, anxiety, muscle tension and other conditions resulting from emotional disturbances.
This technique stimulates the production of endorphins and consequently relieves any pains, thus contributing to the recovery of emotional balance.
